RIPL (Reference & Instruction Discussion Group)

February 24, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Topic: We hope you will join us February 24th at 1:00pm for the RIPL (Reference & Instruction PALS Librarians) discussion of Accessibility and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in library reference & instruction services. To bring us all up to speed for the conversation we will be reading the ACRL’s Keeping Up With….Universal Design for Learning blog post. If you are completely new to UDL, you can also check out CAST’s UDL Guidelines and the article Applying Universal Design to Information Literacy (PDF download) for some ideas on how UDL has been applied to IL instruction in the past (see especially the chart on page 4).

Here are the discussion questions:

  • What policies or best practices does your library have related to accessibility in instruction, research guides, the library website, etc.?
  • Do you incorporate Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in your instruction?
    • If so, which ones, and how well have they worked?
    • If not, why not?
  • What tools or strategies do you find most useful in making sure your online tools and instruction are accessible?
  • Are there any tools, physical spaces, vendors, etc. your library has that you know have accessibility issues that you are unable to fix/address?
